Abstract

Efforts to increase children’s interest in reading should begin in the family environment, as the family is the first and most influential place where children are introduced to reading and learning. Parents play a central role in shaping positive attitudes toward reading by providing guidance, examples, and consistent practice from an early age. A strong interest in reading has a significant impact on children’s academic achievement, language development, and thinking skills, making early stimulation essential. Childhood is an ideal period to build reading habits, starting with basic activities such as recognizing letters, practicing spelling, and understanding simple word meanings. When these activities are carried out regularly, children can gradually develop the ability to read fluently and confidently. After children are able to read, the availability of interesting, enjoyable, and age-appropriate reading materials becomes crucial to maintaining and strengthening their reading interest. Storybooks with attractive illustrations, simple narratives, and relatable themes can help children associate reading with pleasure rather than obligation. Reading habits that are consistently developed in childhood tend to continue into adulthood. In the long term, these habits not only support individual academic success but also contribute to the growth of a broader reading culture within society.
